Matthew Marshall a graduate of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2001 (WAAPA), is in demand for his dynamic lighting designs for theatre, opera, events and dance. Matt's designs are regularly seen on stages all around Australia and Internationally, receiving consistent critical acclaim and recognition from associations such as The Helpmann Awards (Best Lighting Design 2012 nomination) and Australian Production & Design Guild (2x lighting design nominations 2013).
2014 will see Matt mentoring a number of emerging artists and joining the academic staff at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, mentoring technical production students in lighting design.
His main passion as a lighting designer has been showcased most recently on Band Of Magicians (Sydney Festival), Oedipus Schmoedipus (Post/Belvoir), Diamonds Are For Trevor (Darwin Festival), Cinderella with director Lindy Hume (Opera Queensland), Day One, A Hotel, Evening (Black Swan State Theatre Company), Gudirr Gudirr (Dance Massive Festival), The Language of Living, (New Zealand Dance Company), Slow Dances for Fast Times for Martin Del Amo (Carriageworks/Performing Lines), Shaun Tan's The Red Tree and Driving Into Walls both directed by John Sheedy(Barking Gecko/Perth International Arts Festival). Matt received a Best Lighting Design 2012 Helpmann Award nomination for his work on The Red Tree.
Matt worked closely with Director Craig Ilott on the huge smash hit Smoke & Mirrors (Sydney Festival, Spiegeltent International), which scooped 3 Helpmann Awards, was the highest rating broadcast for Studio TV on Foxtel, and earned Matt critical acclaim from the UK press for its season at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Video work has included title designs for acclaimed film director Jocelyn Moorehouse on Sex With Strangers (Sydney Theatre Company), surtitle graphics for St Matthew Passion directed by Lindy Hume for (PIAF 05, Opera Queensland 2012), the PIAF opening performance Karl Karniny under the direction of David Milroy with Yirra Yaakin Noongar Theatre and his most memorable production so far as video designer for Black Swan Theatre’s epic ‘The Career Highlights of the Mamu’ at the 2002 Adelaide Festival and its subsequent tours including the Laokoon Festival in Hamburg, Germany.
Matt's work also crosses into the corporate world where he has
worked on many different product launches, conferences and gala
nights. Most recent work includes Sydney
Convention & Exhibition Centre 25 Years Celebration, Cusine
Now for the 'Godfather of Australian cuisine' Tony Bilson, the
Radio Awards lighting up Kiss Chasey, Jessica Mauboy and Guy
Sebastian. The most unusual subjects include lighting a $900 000
number plate and a 1 million dollar valued stamp!
